  • Further notes on the Motor Circuit and Airfield as follows.

    Air Accidents Investigation Branch Report

The AAIB report on the fatal accident in June last year has now been published. The summary is here from which the full report can be downloaded.

    Hercules Unchained

We recently had visit from a hedge-hopping Hercules of the RAF and wrote to SWK-LowFlying@mod.gov.uk where you can report these things. Turns out it was a training flight and further details as follows :-

" ... there was a Hercules aircraft operating from RAF Brize Norton, Oxfordshire, authorised to operate in the general and wider area.

All military low flying has to be in accordance with Military Aviation Authority (MAA) Regulatory Article (RA) 2330. RA 2330 states that low flying should be conducted at the highest separation criteria, consistent with any operational or training requirements and should normally be no lower than 250 feet Above Ground Level (AGL) for fixed wing aircraft and 100 feet AGL for rotary wing aircraft. Due to their unique role military helicopters may operate down to ground level in some circumstances.

... the Ministry of Defence (MoD) aircraft routinely use civilian airports and aerodromes for their UK mandatory training. Military aircrew maintain contact with Air Traffic Control whilst in these areas.

The Ministry of Defence (MOD) takes its responsibilities to the public very seriously. Unfortunately, there are no uninhabited areas of the UK large enough to cater for essential training needs. It is therefore MOD policy, that in principle, the whole of the UK is open to low flying by military aircraft in order to spread the activity as widely and equitably as possible.

Further information about military low flying can be found on the following website: www.gov.uk/military-low-flying www.gov.uk/military-low-flying "

    Motor Circuit

Dates for 2022. Note that the Eroica Britannia Cycling Event has been postponed until next year.

  • Member's Meeting - 9th to 10th April
  • Festival of Speed - 23rd to 26th June
  • Revival Meeting - 16th to 18th September
  • We have a link to the motor circuit diary on the Goodwood website here, which has details of events and expected noise levels.

    Airfield

Goodwood strive to minimise the effect of noise coming from both the Motor Circuit and the Airfield. However, if you feel that the noise from the circuit is in excess of the permitted limits or that an aircraft has not followed the specified route and has taken off over your house then please contact Goodwood, either on the form on their website or by phone on 01243 755162. Please give details including exact times, especially if complaining about low flying aircraft.
You should receive a response within 48 hours. If you do not please drop an e-mail to goodwoodliaison@summersdaleresidents.co.uk setting out the details.

Please remember that landing aircraft are allowed to approach runway 06 on a North Easterly flight path straight over Summersdale. It is aircraft taking off in the opposite direction ( ie. Runway 24) that are supposed to turn right after take-off and pass through the Lavant Gap, thus avoiding Summersdale.

The 'Noise Preferred Routings' for fixed wing aircraft are shown on this map

If you take an interest in these things, you can check aircraft details here

Which runways are in use will depend on wind direction and Goodwood have provided a link to their weather station, here

Current runway status is as per. the Air Traffic Services Twitter feed below ...

Finally, here is a pilot's eye view of Landing on Runway 06 :-

    Goodwood Drone Project

An extraordinary meeting was set up to brief the Goodwood Aerodrome Consultative Committee members about a project being hosted at Goodwood Aerodrome in 2021. The project was awarded funding by the UK Government in support of enabling Drone-led responses in the future to the CV19 pandemic, or similar.

  • Notes from meeting of the GACC on 6th January here
  • You can download the Powerpoint presentation from the consortium leading the project here
  • This has been given an extra frisson of interest by recent publication of the Air Accident Investigation Board report into the crash of a drone there in 2019. We will be following up on any implications this may have. The AAIB report is here
